Homemade Beach Decor – Paint A Picture!

January 17, 2009 | By | 17 Replies More

Homemade beach decor can be lots of fun to make and add to the homely feel of your beach decorated home.

It has been a while since I posted on my blog, shame on me! But it is just sometimes the way that life gets way ahead of you and there doesn’t seem to be time for anything anymore. I hope it will get better soon.

Today I quickly wanted to share one of my craft ideas with you. I love to paint and draw, and I found that most times I do so I end up doing some picture of the beach or something related to it (shells etc.).

Even if the resulting paintings might not look overly fantastic just by themselves, quite often when you just put them in a nice frame they look totally transformed.

Tropical Beach by … me!

I have attached a picture I did in a 3 hour painting course on a holiday in Queensland. Everybody did the same picture, and all of them looked very different! I am usually shying away from watercolors because you cannot correct mistakes you make (as much as I don’t want to – I seem to be a perfectionist!) but this was actually lots of fun to do and turned out pretty well! The fizzling out of the color on the framed lines was done by adding some salt to the damp area. I really love the way it looks! And by mixing the media – the outlines of the flowers and the boats are done in pastel colors – we achieved a very groovy effect.

So don’t be shy, just try and start painting or drawing your favorite beach scenes, and let yourself be surprised at what you can actually create! The paintings don’t have to be perfect, in fact it adds to the charm of any craft if they are not perfect!

The paintings can be done on canvas (which I actually like best) and hung straight on the wall, or on paper and then framed like here, and they don’t have to be intricate. You might go very abstract and just use the colors that remind you of the beach and the ocean (blues, whites and sandy colors) – your imagination is the limit! Plus, when you hang the pictures in your home they can be a point of discussion if you have got friends over to socialize.

I have to admit it has literally been years since I picked up a paintbrush (this painting was done in 2002, my son was just born..) but just recently I have had the itch in my fingers to start up again, and I hope I will actually take the time and do it. It is so fulfilling and you have a great work of art to show for after.

So have fun painting!

I’m not good at painting, but I consider myself good at sketching. Haven’t done any beaches though in quite some time. I hate it when I can’t make the water look realistic. Have to try it though, now that you have whet my appetite.
Your painting is inspirational though, if you know what I mean. Just Kidding.
